Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum suspended his presidential campaign at a press conference today, surrounded by his family. With heavy hearts and new perspective, Santorum indicated that his daughter Bella’s health was a reality check for the family and that he and his wife Karen are determined to put family first.
“Though we are suspending our campaign today, we are not done fighting,” he said. “There is a lot of greatness in this country.”
Santorum recalled some of his most memorable moments on the trail, stating that the campaign saw ‘miracle after miracle. This race was as improbable as you’ll ever see in a race for President’ and told of his love affair with this country. He spoke of the rise of his iconic sweater vests and the Tea Party’s support, which came from the persistent conversations about the Constitution.
With Santorum out of the race, Romney essentially has an insurmountable delegate lead over Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. The previous talks of a possible brokered convention are unlikely to continue now.
We can now look forward to the next step in this battle to defeat Barack Obama: the vetting of Mitt Romney’s Vice Presidential pick.
